Head into the Blue Mountains

Kingston & Portland, Jamaica

Green mountain landscape in Jamaica

Trade the coast for cooler hills, coffee country and guided walks. Choose a route that suits your fitness and check weather and trail conditions before setting out.

The Blue Mountains rise behind Kingston to more than 2,200 metres at Blue Mountain Peak, Jamaica’s highest point. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for cloud forest, rare birds, Maroon heritage and the coffee that carries its name.

Popular outings include coffee farm visits, walks in Holywell Recreational Park and the pre-dawn hike to the peak for sunrise. Temperatures are noticeably cooler than on the coast, so bring a light layer.

Good to know

  • Roads are narrow and winding; a local driver is often the best choice.
  • Start peak hikes with a guide and check the weather first.
  • Pack a jacket — mountain evenings can be chilly.
